As a small business owner, there is so much to do. You wear all the hats; do all the things, and if you’re not careful you can end up on the hamster wheel going around and around, and around (you get the drift).

I didn’t have aspirations when I was young to become a small business lawyer. I wanted to become a criminal defence lawyer and save the world one client at a time. Fast forward to now, I’ve practiced in various areas of law, including criminal defence, and I have spent time teaching law, too.

The value of the right team and being surrounded by the right people in business can be priceless – and in my experience can mean the difference between surviving and thriving. This can start with growing your team in the traditional sense, aka by engaging employees or contractors.

As a business owner, it can be a struggle to manage all the things we have to do in a day. For me, I tend to fall victim to overwhelm fairly easily, so it is so important that I have a structure that works for me, and that I stick to, to help me with the daily juggle.

Over the years I have seen many businesses crash and burn as a result of the business owners simply not having the time (or mental bandwidth) to take care of absolutely everything in the business. Things fall through the cracks and over time, this leaves the business susceptible to pit-falls and risk.

In a world where the meaning of success has become so fundamentally skewed, it is so rewarding to be taking steps to redefine what this means for women in workplace culture.

This year we are seeing more and more small business in rural and remote areas subjected to the pressures of drought, floods, and bushfires. These challenges can feel like they are never ending for many, and often it is hard to see the light at the end of that tunnel.

In business, there will always be unexpected things that happen. Despite best intentions, things can go wrong from time to time. Often these things catch you off guard, making the situation uncomfortable and unsettling.

We need to give ourselves permission to say no to the work that doesn’t suit us, and to the clients who we know we can’t add value to. We need to do this so that we comfortably look forward to the quality relationships that we can develop by saying yes to the work that best suits us.
